Mission Grounds Gourmet Coffee Helps Orphans

Mission Grounds Gourmet Coffee is a non-profit corporation dedicated to making a significant difference in the lives of children here in Atlanta & around the world. We give our money directly to children and to other non profits. But we give supplies and books to other non profits so the support goes to the kids. We are careful to make sure our money does not go to pay salaries. We have no salaries and we make certain we don’t pay anyone’s salaries. We’re accomplishing that goal by selling our Fantastic-TASTING, gourmet coffee & donating 100% of the profits to carefully selected charitable projects such as group homes, shelters, orphanages & schools. The Company – Mission Grounds Gourmet Coffee This coffee company was founded by Boake and Carol Moore, as an extension of their mission work in Africa. They got the thought from another friend who brought back bags of the local coffee to sell through his church.  They wanted to help a lot of children but wanted a way to generate consistent donations over a long period of time so they could really help a lot of children. They joined the Café CoopeTarrazu Farmer’s Co-Op which enabled them to make buys from a local group of 2500 farmers. Then they started importing the coffee that is now sold as Mission Grounds. There are no administrative overhead costs at Mission Grounds. We rely on a team of volunteers led by successful business executives such as Thomas Loach and Rick Sample. No one involved in the effort accepts a salary. Overhead is limited to shipping, packaging and labeling the coffee, and comprises less than 5% of revenue Every penny of profit goes toward child-centered projects in the U.S. and countries around the world. We use personal contacts to transfer funds and ensure the entire amount reaches its intended destination. The Coffee Mission Grounds Coffee is made from the finest Arabica beans grown in the rich volcanic soil of the Tarrazu region of Costa Rica. Known for its intense aroma and depth of flavor, coffee from this region is frequently used to improve the flavor of huge-name blends. Tarrazu coffee is graded at five levels. The highest quality (#1) is also the least abundant, because it is grown at the highest altitudes and takes the longest to grow and ripen. Large coffee chains, which must buy their beans in huge quantities, routinely pass over grades 1 and 2, even for their finest coffees. Mission Grounds buys only the #1 grade beans. We offer two roasting options: Dark Roast, which is slow roasted for a smooth, rich taste, slightly spicy and full-bodied, and Mission Grounds Light Roast which offers a more delicate flavor that is crisp and bright. The Opportunity:There are several ways you can show your support for the work of Mission Grounds: BUY MISSION GROUNDS COFFEE. Whether you buy one pound for your personal enjoyment, or several pounds a week to serve in your corporate break room, every donation helps our causes. SELL MISSION GROUNDS COFFEE. If you have a restaurant or coffee shop, we’d like to be your house brew. DONATE DIRECTLY TO A PROJECT. We’ll be pleased to discuss the efforts we have underway and how your donations can make a difference. Our current projects are listed on the back panel of this brochure. Corporations can know 100% of their donations go to helping children and not to a salary or overhead. Donate where giving makes the largest difference. VOLUNTEER TO HELP HOMELESS CHILDREN: Please give me a call at (678) 480-1067, and let’s talk. The Projects: Mission Grounds is currently supporting projects in several areas: Atlanta, Georgia: Sales from Mission Grounds Coffee support The Children’s Restoration Network (CRN) and Jars of Clay. These two organizations provide food, clothing, housing, education and job training for children in need in the Atlanta area. Jars of Clay works specifically with the inner-city poor, CRN works with shelters and group homes throughout Metro Atlanta. China: Mission Grounds has recently completed a third school near Kunming in the Yunnan province. We have identified 12 more sites for future school construction. Our goal is to complete at least 2 or 3 schools per year. Venezuela: Mission Grounds is constructing and supporting an orphanage housing 160 children that is under construction in the town of Barquisimeto. It is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2008. At least one other site has been identified for a similar facility. Russia: Mission Grounds supports several orphanages in St. Petersburg, including an HIV home, through an organization called Relational Bridges International. Other Projects: Mission Grounds partnered with Family Circle magazine to help families displaced by Hurricane Katrina. We also sponsored Back to School festivals to distribute backpacks and school supplies to children in Buffalo, NY and New Orleans, LA. We currently are exploring similar opportunities with children’s charities in Pittsburgh, PA, Charlotte, NC and other U.S. cities

Your Guide to Gourmet Coffee Roasters

Do you dream of waking up to the wonderful aroma of roasted coffee?  Most coffee lovers will certainly answer yes to this question, especially if the coffee were talking about its gourmet coffee.  The only problem with such wonderful dream is that for most people buying gourmet coffee on a daily basis is just not affordable, especially when a pound of gourmet coffee can be as high as $10.

So what can we do about this?  Do we throw the towel in and resign to the thought of only being able to buy this type of coffee for special occasions? Not at all! — There are many ways to work around this problem; one of them is referred to as coffee roasting.

Roasting coffee beans is not as complex as you may reckon. The advantages of roasting your own beans and making a gourmet cup of Java are that it is affordable and really becomes the leisure activity of many coffee lovers. If all this sounds excellent to you let us go ahead and mention the many methods available for roasting your very own coffee.

Air Roasting

This is a well loved method that relies on hot air in order to roast the beans.  People who choose to use this method will often buy air popcorn popper machines because they are simple to use and get the job done.  Compared to other methods, air roasting can be considered the best because it produces even roasts, the only problem with air roasting is that if you use an air popcorn popper you might only be able to roast 3 to 4 ounces at a time.

Oven Roasting

Unlike the previous method this type of roasting relies on heat generated by an oven, the problem with oven roasting is that you are not able to see the beans as they are being prepared, the oven will vent smoke and the roasting can be uneven.  Some people say that uneven roasting can add to the flavor of the coffee but if the oven produces results that are too uneven it will have negative effects.

Gourmet Coffee Roasters

If you want to get a right cup of Gourmet coffee then the best choice you can make is to buy a machine that has been specifically designed to roast coffee beans using different modes.  You can buy shade grown Gourmet flavored beans at a very low price (2-5 dollars) and then roast them at home with your own machine.  A few examples of Gourmet roasters are the iRoast, the Nesco roaster and the Gourmet roaster made by Hearthware.

In order to get the best taste from Gourmet flavored beans it is vital that you use a precision roaster such as the ones mentioned before, there are many other brands and models that you can buy but if they do not use a precision instrument you might end up over roasting your beans and you might end up with a amusing tasting cup of Java.  Most of these machines can only roast small parts of green beans (1/2 cup to 1 cup) but the results are nothing small of incredible.

Exploring the Different Types of Coffee Creamers

Sometimes, what goes in your gourmet coffee can be as vital as the coffee itself. In 1961 Nestle revolutionized the way we drink our coffee by introducing the world’s first non-dairy powdered coffee creamer. Borden’s followed not long after with Cremora, and powdered non-dairy creamer became a staple in many American kitchens.

In the mid-70s, Rich Foods introduced Coffee Rich non-dairy liquid creamer, marketing it as a creamy substitute for half-and-half for those who could not tolerate milk, or were avoiding dairy fats. Since then, things have not been the same. These days, half the dairy freezer at the supermarket is filled with non-dairy coffee creamers in a wide variety of brands and flavors, some especially made to accent gourmet coffee.

In 1980, a new player hit the supermarket shelves. International Delight made it simple to have tasty flavored coffees at home, without having to buy expensive flavored coffee. You could buy it in the dairy aisle in any one of three flavors: Irish Cream, Cinnamon Hazelnut or French Vanilla. Within months, Coffee-mate followed with its own line of coffee creamers, featuring Vanilla, Hazelnut and Irish Cream flavors. Since then, both companies have taken to introducing new flavors, limited edition flavors and holiday flavors on a regular basis. Take a look at what the major players in the coffee creamer market are offering.

Coffee-Mate

The first and still the largest of the bunch, Coffee-Mate has expanded its line enormously over the past few years. Catering to their customers’ tastes, Coffee-Mate has even held contests to allow customers to choose their limited edition flavors (vanilla chai spice and coconut crème are the two most recent entries). Coffee-Mate now offers twenty different flavors, including:

Flavored

Amaretto, Chocolate Raspberry, Cinnamon Vanilla Crème, Coconut Crème, Crème Brulée, Vanilla Crème, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Irish Crème, Toffee Nut, Vanilla Caramel, Vanilla Nut and Vanilla Chai Spice

Seasonal Flavors

Eggnog, Gingerbread, Peppermint, Mocha, Pumpkin Spice

Special Edition

Blueberry Cobbler, Pralines & Crème

But, there are many other differences between coffee creamers than just the flavors. Coffee-mate especially has introduced some innovations in packaging and in chemical makeup to enhance its brand. For those watching their stout and sugar intake, among the specialty coffee creamers made by Coffee-mate, are stout free and sugar free versions of many of its most well loved flavors (in case you were wondering, all the Coffee-mate flavors have 0% trans stout). In addition, they offer coffee creamers in three different forms: powdered, liquid and the newest, concentrate – which comes in a very cool part controlled pump bottle. Any cup of gourmet coffee will benefit from a specialty coffee creamer.

You can also buy Coffee-Mate in several different kinds of packaging. The standard liquid creamer needs to be refrigerated, but if you buy Coffee-Mate in individual serving size plastic cups (boxes of 50), you can keep them on the shelf. The powdered Coffee-Mate variety, which comes in most of the same flavors as the liquid (including stout-free and sugar-free), also does not require refrigeration.

Coffee-Mate comes in original, non-flavored versions, both liquid and powdered, and has recently announced that it will be introducing a non-dairy half-and-half in the near future.

International Delight

When International Delight introduced their part-control liquid flavored coffee creamers, they launched an entire new category of food products. International Delight was marketed as a luxury, and it certainly tasted like one. International Delight is now available in nine different flavors, including stout free and reduced sugar versions of their most well loved flavors. The International Delight flavors include:

Original Flavors

Amaretto, Cinnamon Hazelnut, French Vanilla, Hazelnut, Irish Crème, Southern Butter Pecan, Vanilla Hazelnut, Vanilla Toffee Caramel and Hershey’s Chocolate Caramel

Stout Free Flavors

Stout Free Amaretto, Stout Free Cinnamon Hazelnut, Stout Free French Vanilla, and Stout Free Irish Crème

Reduced Sugar Flavors

Reduced Sugar French Vanilla and Reduced Sugar Hazelnut.

International Delight coffee creamer is available in pints, quarts and individual part control sizes. The pints and quarts must be refrigerated, but the individual single part cups can be stored on your cupboard shelf until they are opened. Similar to Coffee-Mate, International Delight is non-dairy and certified kosher, though both well loved non-dairy creamers contain sodium caseinate, which is made from solidified milk.

If you happen to run a coffee service or offer gourmet or regular coffee in the break room at your office, providing a variety of flavored non-dairy coffee creamers is a fantastic way to give your customers or employees a choice of flavors without having the make separate pots of coffee to satisfy every taste.

A Brief Overview of Gourmet Coffee

The word Gourmet is used to refer to the fancier grade, cut, or quality of many of the foods and beverages we consume. Gourmet foods and drinks have long been associated as the regular fare for the rich and well-known who can afford the higher pricing that often accompanies many of these finer food and beverage versions. Coffee is a beverage that has been available in cheap, regular and gourmet versions for a long time and the consumption rate of coffee among people from around the world continues to increase every year. Gourmet coffee may have once only been served in the finest dining establishments and found being served mostly in the homes of the upper class, but gourmet coffee is widely available and affordable to a variety of people and is found in a variety of settings today.

Coffee is made from coffee beans which are found within the berries that develop and ripen on a number of smaller evergreen bush plant species known as the Coffea plant. After ripening, coffee berries are harvested, and then undergo a processing which also includes drying them. It is the coffee beans that remain after the processing and drying of the coffee berries. The beans are then roasted to various degrees which cause them to change physically and in the tastes they produce. Finally, the coffee beans are grinded down into a fine consistency that is commonly known as coffee grounds, and packaged and shipped to destinations around the world where consumers can buy and brew coffee grounds to make coffee in commercial, hospitality, institutional, and residential settings. Some people prefer to grind their own coffee beans before brewing them for coffee. Packaged coffee beans that have not been ground can be bought in stores and ground using the grinding mills that are made available in most of the stores selling them, but also with grinding machines in the home.

The two most commercially grown species of the coffea plant that produce the coffee beans used to make the coffee that the world’s population consumes, are Robusta and Arabica. Gourmet coffee is made from the top tier coffee beans from the arabica coffea plant. These top tier arabica coffea plants are typically grown at very high altitudes (above 3000ft) with ideal soil and climate conditions. The coffee beans produced have fuller flavors, are more aromatic, and have less caffeine in them than other varieties of coffee beans such as Robustas. The coffee beans of arabica coffea plants grown at lower altitudes are still noted among consumers as having richer flavors than the flavors produced by Robusta coffee beans, but it is only the top tier arabica coffee beans that are considered to be Gourmet, and thereby from which gourmet coffee is derived.

Coffee bean grounds and coffee beans that have not been grinded down need to be stored in air-tight containers and kept cool in order to protect them from losing their flavor. The containers that coffee is typically sold in are not the most ideal for storing coffee for a long period of time. When you arrive home after purchasing coffee grounds at the store, consider transferring the fresh coffee grounds to appropriate storage containers to extend its shelf life and full flavor.

Coffee can be brewed in many ways such as boiling, pressuring, and steeping. Most of us brew our coffee using automatic coffee brewing machines and percolators which use gravity to pull hot water through coffee grounds where the hot water mixed with the oils and essences of the coffee grounds empties into a liquid holding container below. Filters are used to keep coffee granules from being emptied into the carafe or liquid holding container from which the brewed coffee can then be served from because most people do not want to drink the coffee granules. Coffee granules can be very bitter once the flavor able oils and essences have been removed through the brewing process. Plants and flowers like coffee grounds though for anyone who is looking for a greener alternative of what to do with coffee grounds after brewing instead of just throwing them in the trash.

Of course, Gourmet coffee beans are only the beginning to making a truly gourmet coffee experience for many gourmet coffee drinkers. Some people are quite content with drinking their gourmet coffee black, without adding anything like milk, creamer, sugar or other sweeteners or flavorings, to their coffee. While many others want to enhance their gourmet coffee and drinking experience with tasty additions like milk that is whipped into a froth, sweeteners, and mixing in other flavors like chocolate, vanilla, cinnamon, and mint, to name just a few. Huge name coffee chains sell a wide variety of gourmet coffee with different tasty additions and flavors to appeal to gourmet coffee lovers. But, brewing gourmet coffee at home is usually much cheaper, and you can add what you want to your coffee to satisfy your refined, gourmet tastes.

Organic Gourmet Coffee is Prized For Being the Best of the Best

Gourmet coffees are just like gourmet meals – top of the line in every way, using only the finest ingredients and best methods to make a finished product that is wonderful in every way. Gourmet coffee comes in a number of varieties and each uses only the very best quality coffee beans for roasting.

Organic gourmet coffee is a special coffee treat because not only is it gourmet, meaning that you can expect rich, smooth, flavorful and full-bodied coffee, but it’s organic, meaning that you can expect that the coffee has been grown with the best, most environmental and people-friendly practices. The rarest coffees that are highly sought after as gourmet coffees can all be grown organically, and if you look, you can find brilliant organic gourmet coffee varieties.

The best way to buy any gourmet coffee and of course organic gourmet coffee is fresh from the roaster. This isn’t really possible from your local supermarket although your favorite store probably offers organic gourmet coffee – both whole bean and ground. Often, it’s best to order fresh organic gourmet coffee straight from a specialty business that roasts specialty coffees fresh daily. You can do this online, or from specialty catalogs.

The key to getting organic gourmet coffee is getting it freshly roasted. The fresher it is, the better the flavor and overall quality will be. The fact that you are getting gourmet coffee made from organically grown coffee beans means that your gourmet coffee is going to the very best you can possibly get – the best of the best!

The Best Flavored Organic Coffee Uses the Best Ingredients

Determining which organic coffee is the best-flavored organic coffee could prove to be rather hard. After all, isn’t it simply a matter of taste? Even though your opinion might differ from that of a fellow coffee lover, there are still some things that you will find that all of the best-flavored organic coffees have in common.

First, really excellent flavored coffee, organic or otherwise will have 100% natural flavorings. The use of natural flavors gives the organic coffee delicate hints of the fruit, nut or other extracts that are used. Medium roasted organic coffee beans seem to lend themselves better to accepting flavorings and tend to make the added flavors come alive on your taste buds better.

Common flavorings used to add different tastes to your organic coffee can include hazelnut, chocolate, vanilla, Irish cream and Macadamia nut. Almond, amaretto, coconut, cinnamon and peppermint are among other common flavors added to coffee. Sometimes you will find these in exotic combination’s with yet other flavors.

Rich organic coffee is sometimes considered best when it is accented by a hint of something else – maybe a bit of hazelnut with a whisper of chocolate or a dash of almond and coconut to lend a South Seas taste.

No matter what your personal preference of flavorings, the best-flavored organic coffee is one that uses the finest organic coffee beans combined with the best natural flavorings. The combination will surprise and delight you with every sip!

Coffee Syrups, Adding A Bohemian Twist To Your Coffee

Look at any real estate material promoting an area to live in and they will invariably use phrases like “delight in the cosmopolitan cafe lifestyle just outside your front door”. A cafe culture in your neighborhood is seen as aspirational, invoking images of the bygone bohemian coffee houses of Europe. This has led to a huge increase in coffee shops, from large multi-nationals like Starbucks, to individual organic cafes selling Fairtrade coffee blends from around the world.

These coffee shops will usually sell intriguingly flavored coffees such as Dark Amaretto Frappucino, Gingerbread Mocha, Raspberry Latte etc. These specialty coffees are flavored using one or more coffee syrups. Syrups come in many flavors, from the aforementioned Amaretto to caramel, almond and many fruit flavors such as raspberry and blueberry. To me, nothing beats a strong espresso machiato, but if I am going to be ensconced for a while, a longer coffee, flavored with a premium syrup is a regular choice.

Coffee syrups are made from varying quality ingedients which obviously affects the price. The best brands are made from the finest nuts and fruits and distilled down into the syrup used in coffee. Top brands to look out for in your local coffee shop include Da Vinci, Monin and Dolce. You should look for syrups with a higher concentration of the ingredient compared to the syrup itself. If you are buying them for home use, it is worth spending the extra for the best quality brands because they will be cheaper in the long run and you will have a much nicer experience per cup.

Another thing to look for when selecting coffee syrups is that some brands are better than others at not curdling the milk if you add it. Some cheaper brands are also prone to separating if heated too much. Again, as with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

You might reckon that adding syurp to your coffee would be a disaster for the weight-concious, but most of the excellent brands are stout and cholesterol-free. Indeed sugar-free coffee syrups are readily available without compromising on flavor. They are fantastic for people on low-carbohydrate diets too.

Coffee syrups are also not just for coffee. They can be used in other drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. For example you can make tasty iced frappes. They are also tasty added to soda water. They are perfect for adding to kid’s drinks as you can make fascinating concoctions that are far lower in sugar than regular soft drinks.

Baking is also another fantastic way of using these flavorful syrups. They can be used in cakes, cookies and even breads. You are limited only by your creativity. And let us not forget the delights of adding a large blob of caramel coffee syrup to vanilla ice cream. Truly sublime!

So next time you are in you local coffee house enjoying the bohemian cafe lifestyle, consider adding a flavored syrup to your coffee to take your experience to the next level.
